SAP TechEd 2012 Top 10

Time to count the votes ;-) This year's SAP TechEd is fully packed with 338 Hands-On Sessions and Lectures. And then I'm not taking into account all the other types 20-minute presentation, 30-minute panel discussion, demo station, demo theater, discussion table, expert networking session, microforum discussion, Q&A, Testdrive area. In total you can choose out of 1353 options. Good luck with that ;-)

How is the SAP TechEd Top 10 put together? With the excel download I filtered the Title column on specific keywords, like HANA. For each topic the number of sessions is counted and that delivers a Top 10.

1.       (1,1,1,1) SAP NetWeaver (81)
2.       (4, -, -, -) HANA (59)
3.       (3, 7, -, -) Mobile, mobility, Sybase, Syclo (42)
4.       (-, -, -, -) Cloud (21)
5.       (2, 2, 2, 10) Business Objects (20)
6.       (5, 3, 3, 6) ABAP (18)
7.       (9, -, -, -) Portal (16)
8.        (6, 4, 5, 4) BPM, Business Process Management, Orchestration (14)
9.       (-, -, -, -) Gateway (10)
10.   (7, 8, -, -) PI, Process Integration (5)

So what's hot and what not at SAP TechEd in 2012?

  • There is no Java found in any of the session titles. Bit strange as al lot of cloud development is done with Java.
  • Again only a very little attention to Microsoft, SharePoint or Duet. I counted 2 sessions.
  • HANA moved up from 4th to second place. No surprise though.
  • Cloud entered the Top 10 from nothing (last year OnDemand made it to 12) to 4!!
  • Since last year SAP's message is about bringing Cloud, Mobility and InMemory to the core. You can see that resembled in numbers 2, 3 and 4.
  • Happy that BPM and orchestration is still in the top 10. With all the news around Cloud, Mobile and HANA you could almost forget that it all relates to business processes! With the new Process Orchestration environment there will be a boost on this area.
  • Gateway is promising, but only at 9. I expected this topic to be higher in the list.
  • No session on UI5? I really don't understand this one. Probably integrated within Gateway or Mobile sessions, but still. Topic is interesting enough to have its own sessions.
Now to define your personal agenda, a bit of a challenge …
See you all next week in Madrid.

Update - added links to previous Top 10's for your convenience.

SAP TechEd Top 10 (2010)

Here we go, Top 10 SAP TechEd topics 2010. Just like in 2009 and in 2008 . Based on the 417 sessions published on the site I counted the hit ratio on the below listed topics. Not to be taken too seriously, just for fun ;-) (1, 1) SAP NetWeaver (93 sessions) (2, 10) Business Objects (45) (3, 6) ABAP (32) (5, 4) BPM (22) (4, 5) BI (18) (-, -) Sybase (17) (-, -) Mobile (15) (-, -) PI (13) (7, 9) Web Dynpro (12) (7, 10) Enterprise services (8) (-,-) Microsoft (8) Runners up : Sybase and mobile applications. Looking forward to play around with that next week. And as predicted : Microsoft. Droppers , not in the Top 10 anymore: Composition Environment (4 sessions, #8 in 2008, #9 in 2009), Java (4 sessions, #3 in 2008, #8 in 2009) and SOA (4 sessions, #2 in 2008, #6 in 2009). Sybase is no surprise. Just as Business Objects wasn't last year. Java dropped out of the Top 10. Looking back at SAP TechEd 2009 you could predict that to happen. Last year all Java sessions were hidden somewher

Hiking the Grossvenediger with The Next View

In 2014 The Next View celebrates its 5th anniversary. And we did that in style. We all took off to Austria and hiked the Grossvenediger, top 4 of highest mountains in Austria. Hiking route The first day we hiked in pretty good weather conditions to Defreggerhaus. The second day, the hike to the actual summit (The Next Summit ;-) we woke up early and found out that snow covered our route. But that didn't undermine our spirit. We took off and had a great hike. We almost made it to the top, but unfortunately weather conditions (snow and wind) worsened and with the sign in sight we had to return. Look very close, you can see a grey cross somewhere in the top left corner ;-) Back to a safer spot to take our group picture. With Schnapps of course ;-) What an amazing experience. Hiking a 3666 meter high mountain was something completely new for me. Doing that with colleagues was really awesome! More pictures in my Grossvenediger album .
